Investing in students: news from graduating seniors

At the end of every academic year, graduating seniors at Shippensburg University have one question on their mind:  “What am I going to do after graduation?”  There are many options available to young people fresh out of college and  sometimes students are not sure which path to take.  Spring 2008 graduate Jenn Bly, an English major with minors in Art and Spanish, knows what it is like to have options, “I will be attending the University of Maryland in the fall for my M.A. in Rhetoric and Political Culture.  However, I also applied for a Fulbright Grant through Shippensburg University . My application was recommended by the National Screening Committee of the Institute of International Education to the Argentinean government.  I’m still waiting to hear the final word on which candidates were selected and I’m keeping my fingers crossed.”

Other students have more concrete plans, like Brittney Kellem, a business management major.  “I will be an Executive Team leader for Target Corporation overseeing the supervisors that manage sales associates.  I hope to take graduate courses at Ship while I’m working to continue my education.”

These graduates have been searching very hard for the career path that will best suit them.  Many Bachelors of Science students will go on to graduate school to pursue a further degree in their respective fields, like computer science major John Yackovich who will be attending the University of Pittsburgh  for a Ph.D. in computer science, chemistry major Benjamin Klahr who will study for a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry at Michigan State University, and biology major Scott Jones who is going to Marshall University in West Virginia for a masters in biology.  Other students will find a teaching position before the start of next school year, like elementary education major Megan Keener and mathematics secondary education major Derek Deutsch.  Beth Zucconi plans to spend a few weeks in China teaching English before starting graduate work in Biochemistry at the University of Maryland while Danielle Geller hopes to pursue her literary career for a while before attending graduate school.

The choices available to Shippensburg University ’s graduating seniors are diverse and cover a wide range of careers.  We wish our graduates luck in making these important decisions and hope that whatever career path they choose will be a successful one.
