Gifts Through Your Will

Would you like to do something good for Shippensburg? For SU alumni, parents and friends, the bequest is the most popular form of planned gifts.  Bequests account for a significant portion of the SU Foundation ’s endowment and provide critical funding for Foundation support of University programs, facilities and scholarships.  Bequests are the simplest way to make a planned gift which you make through a written and executed will. If you have already made provisions for Shippensburg University Foundation in your will, or plan to do so, please notify the SU Foundation office and we will send you an invitation to join our recognition society, the Honor Society.

Advantages of making a bequest:

·      Charitable gifts made through your will are deductible for estate tax purposes.

·      A bequest may place your estate in a lower tax bracket.

·      If you wish to establish a scholarship or other endowment fund through your will, you can request that it be named for you or anyone you wish to honor.

·      When you notify SU Foundation of your bequest intention, you will be invited to join the Honor Society.

How do I make a bequest to SU Foundation in my will?  Making a bequest is quite simple. Consult with your legal advisor who will advise you on one of four ways you can bequeath assets to the Shippensburg University Foundation:

·      Specify a certain dollar amount to go to SU Foundation (i.e., cash).  Example: I give (dollar amount) to Shippensburg University Foundation, to be used where it is most needed.

·      Earmark certain assets such as property, artwork or stock to come to SU Foundation .  Example: I give (description of property) to Shippensburg University Foundation, to be used where it is most needed.

·      Commit a percentage of the value of your estate to SU Foundation .  Example: I give (the desired percentage) of my estate to Shippensburg University Foundation, to be used where it is most needed.

·      Make a residual bequest of all or a portion of the remainder of your estate after payment of debts and expenses.  Example: I give the remainder of the property I own at my death, after all debts, taxes, expenses and other bequests have been paid, to Shippensburg University Foundation, to be used where it is most needed.

·      Restricted Bequests - The samples of bequest language above are designed to provide unrestricted gifts, whereby the Foundation would use the gift where it is most needed. However, you may prefer to restrict your bequest for a specific purpose. For example, if your bequest will be worth $25,000, you can establish a named scholarship that will provide financial support for future Shippensburg University students and you may set the necessary criteria for selecting a recipient.

If you would like to establish a scholarship or other restricted gift, please contact the Shippensburg University Foundation aqt 717-477-1377 . By alerting us, you help ensure that the SU Foundation fully understands your desires so that your wishes may be carried out exactly as you intended.
