Getting A Global Perspective

When Julianne Yenser began her career as a teacher at Northwestern Lehigh Middle School she brought to her classroom a world of experience - literally.
Recipient of the Theodore and Blanche Barnhart Elementary Education Scholarship, McGaughey-Higgins Outstanding Student Scholarship, and a SU Foundation Scholarship, she spent a semester living and studying in Florence, Italy. The experience, she said, "exploded my creative and aesthetic perspective. I hope to use my experiences and enthusiasm to integrate the artistic, creative process in all subject areas."

And, spending a semester in Italy is only part of the story. Thanks to the scholarship support she received, Julianne also traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland, as part of the State System summer honors study program. Then, after finishing her student teaching in a sixth grade classroom, she spent two months student teaching in Auckland, New Zealand, through an exchange program. She said, "Whoever thought I would have the opportunity to student teach in New Zealand. What an amazing opportunity!"

She also took advantage of her four years at Shippensburg. Julianne served as the Public Relations Director for the campus radio station, was a member of the outdoor hiking club and Christian Fellowship, and had a word-study position at media services.

Julianne's experiences studying and living abroad three different times reflect Shippensburg's commitment to making study abroad opportunities available. As Shippensburg University looks to the challenges of the 21st century, one of the clear core values shared across the campus is the desire to prepare students to live and work in a global environment. "We want our students to understand clearly that we live in a global environment," said Dr. Anthony Ceddia, president of the University. "When they have the opportunity to study abroad, they should take the chance to immerse themselves in another culture and learn about other people.

"We hope that the end result will be our students will be better prepared to live in an international world."
Study Abroad programs are available for a semester or a year. In a typical year, Shippensburg students study in Canada, Australia, Thailand, Great Britain, Germany, France, Denmark, Ireland, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Costa Rico, and Spain.

One of the key considerations for most students is cost. That's why endowment support is the key to making study abroad opportunities available to a broader cross section of students. In recognition of the importance of such funding, the SU Foundation Board of Directors and the University Council of Trustees included endowment for study abroad among the components in "Navigating into the Future - The Campaign for Shippensburg University," the comprehensive campaign that will be formally launched in the fall of 2002.
