WE DID IT!

Together We Conquered the Kresge Science Challenge!

On June 12, 2004 , the Kresge Science Steering Committee, co-chaired by Dr. Bill Peightel and Dr. Steven Wikel, presented a check for $1,134,049 to SU President Tony Ceddia

We are pleased to announce that, due to the hard work of our volunteer steering committee and the generosity of our benefactors, we have met and surpassed the $800,000 fundraising goal to achieve the Kresge Science Initiative Challenge.

In order to meet the need for new and improved scientific instrumentation in the biology, chemistry, geography/earth science, physics, and psychology departments, the SU Foundation, on behalf of the University, applied to The Kresge Foundation in fiscal year 2001-02 for a two-part grant to benefit the sciences.  After raising an initial $400,000 to qualify for the grant, we received the news that The Kresge Foundation would provide a total of $400,000, broken into two $200,000 awards.  The first $200,000 was immediately used to purchase much-needed equipment.

In order for us to receive the second $200,000 award, The Kresge Foundation required that the SU Foundation raise $800,000 by June 1, 2004 to fund a science endowment.  This would ensure that a stream of income would benefit the sciences in perpetuity by providing funding for the replacement and maintenance of equipment.  During an 18-month whirlwind of activity, we were successful in raising even more than The Kresge Science Foundation required, securing commitments of $934,049!  The second part of the grant was then awarded by The Kresge Foundation, making the total for the endowment $1,134,049.

We will continue to seek funds for the Kresge Science endowment so that the funding for scientific equipment will continue to grow.  Thank you to everyone who participated with your generous support!  Together we have conquered this challenge!
