Alternative Fall Break
Alternative Fall Break
Shippensburg University faculty, staff, and students have developed an alternative fall break (AFB) service-learning trip to the Gulf Coast to occur from October 7- 12, 2010. This program will make it possible for up to 55 members of the campus community (24 freshmen, 24 upperclassmen, and 7 supporting faculty/staff) to learn and experience first-hand the social, political, economic, and environmental impacts of the oil spill. On the trip, participants will volunteer and work alongside research scientists at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs, MS, learning and experiencing the importance of marine life management. They will also perform clean-up and recovery efforts with the Mississippi Land Trust in Pascagoula, MS, removing debris, performing site assessments, and cataloguing the natural resources still present in the marshes and beaches there. The group will also assist other community outreach organizations such as the Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum in Biloxi, MS, planting native trees and shrubs, and removing debris still left behind from hurricane Katrina. Make a gift now to help make this trip available to all students, regardless of personal financial circumstances. With your help, we can give Shippensburg University students, who are the leaders of tomorrow, an experience that augments their classroom education with the knowledge and skills they will need to creatively take on and overcome similar challenges we may face in the future.
