JohnsonDean’s Message
Shippensburg University, established in 1871, originally was established to prepare teachers for a career in academia.  The school, then named the Cumberland Valley Normal School, quickly became a vital resource in Pennsylvania’s growth, starting a rich tradition of service that is thriving to this day in the College of Education and Human Services.

Each year brilliant faculty train some of the region’s best and brightest students forming a synergy in progressive programs.  It is a rich exchange where information is transformed into knowledge, which, in turn, becomes wisdom as the students grow in their careers.

Our college has had a bright past, however, the future promises to become even brighter.  While we are proud members of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, we know that to achieve our full potential, financial support from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania must be complemented with support from alumni and friends of the University.  To remain one of the top universities in the North East region, as reported in independent annual surveys, this private support in addition to the State funding, is essential.

I urge you to look into the many programs and services that the College of Education and Human Services offers, choose one or more that you feel match your charitable giving goals, and support them at whatever level you can. It is through the tremendous support from alumni and friends of the University that we have come as far as we have in the past.  I would like to thank you in advance for you consideration of supporting our College as we look forward to a bright future.

James R. Johnson, Ph.D.
Dean, College of Education and Human Services

About the College
Shippensburg University holds an excellent reputation for educating quality teachers since its first graduating class in 1871. The Teacher Education department makes its home in the College of Education and Human Services.

The College of Education and Human Services includes six other departments that involve service to others: Counseling, Criminal Justice, Educational Leadership and Policy, Health and Physical Education, Military Science, and Social Work. These programs earn national recognition and meet stringent standards for accreditation.

The Council on Social Work Education has granted the social work program full accreditation status. The criminal justice program benefits from the Center for Juvenile Justice located on campus.  The Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School, also on campus, offers an opportunity for elementary education majors to observe and participate in an elementary school.
