College of Arts and Sciences

Mike DeanMessage from the Dean of Arts & Sciences
The College of Arts & Sciences at Shippensburg University upholds the principle that a high-quality, professional education within a major, when combined with a minor emphasis and a broadly-based general educational experience, provides a firm foundation upon which to build a productive and enriched life and career pathway.

Within the College of Arts & Sciences is a wide range of majors and minors to meet every interest. We have a superb faculty with the expertise to support those academic programs.

Because of the nature of the disciplines comprising the College, our faculty focuses students on development of critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills – a set of “soft-skills” that, when combined with disciplinary knowledge, is highly valued by employers, graduate schools, and professional schools.
The College of Arts & Sciences works in collaboration with the Shippensburg University Foundation in order to seek and provide the resources to meet the needs of our students, faculty, and the overall academic program that is offered.  We welcome our alumni and friends to consider gifts designated to help the College of Arts & Sciences in its mission in service to our students.

James H. Mike, Ph.D.
Dean, College of Arts and Sciences

About the College
The College of Arts and Sciences touches the life of every Shippensburg University student.  The College’s general education program in the liberal arts acts as the foundation of a Shippensburg education.

The College of Arts and Sciences provides an education focused on the ability to adapt to new situations and to find new solutions.  This type of education is necessary in the 21st century where individuals enter new careers and change jobs throughout their working lives.

The College offers a learning atmosphere that brings out the best in students: small classes, close attention from professors, in-class debate, hands-on experiences, up-to-date technology, and cooperative arrangements with other universities.
